U.S.-RESIDING DOCTORATE HOLDERS IN SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, AND HEALTH PURSUE CAREERS ACROSS EMPLOYMENT SECTORS: 2023

An estimated 908,700 doctorate holders in science, engineering, and health were employed in the U.S. in 2023. They held doctorates in a wide variety of fields. While varying by field, 40.5% worked in educational institutions, 8.6% worked in government, and 50.9% worked in business/industry. Each circle in the diagram represents a fine field of doctorates and is sized to that field's proportion of the U.S.-residing employed science, engineering, and health doctorate population.

Educational institution includes 4-year colleges or universities, medical schools (including university-affiliated hospitals or medical centers), university-affiliated research institutes, 2-year colleges, community colleges, technical institutes, precollege institutions, and other educational institutions. Government includes U.S. federal, state, and local governments. Business or industry includes private for profit, private not for profit, self-employed or business owners in incorporated or nonincorporated business, non-U.S. governments, and employers not broken out separately.
